Event description

At Secondary Vocational and Technical School Bezigrad Ljubljana, we educate students to qualify for different professions. Knowing cultural heritage is understood as a part of national consciousness. As a part of DEKD, during the week of cultural heritage on 27 th of September 2017, we will host a creative workshop of wool felting in the reading room of school library. While discussing cultural heritage, we'll make felted water bottle skins - therefore joining one of the oldest technique of textile art with decorating a modern and useful object. The mentors will lead you through creative world of handcrafting, where the riches of knowledge, firmness of roots, diversity of modern times and striving after new meet. With the water bottle, and also with the technique of creating (we use water for felting) we remind the public of appropriate relationship towards water. Human nature definitely involves imagination and a wish to create. Masterpieces are inherited from mother to daughter, from father to son, and many had to make place for new ways of life and new technology. The roots of creating are in our rich cultural heritage from which we take the knowledge and inspiration. Old knowledge persists through making replicas and also through fashionable, useful objects. The technique of felting wool is nowadays very popular. With different techniques it is possible to wet felt other materials alongside with wool, even silk scarfs. With the techniques of wet and dry felting we can make clothes, rugs, masks, shoes, slippers, bags, hats and many other decorative objects and toys. In hand felting wool, which is one of the oldest techniques of textile art, the influence of warm water and mechanical effect cause the expansion of woolen fibers and scales to open up. With rubbing the woolen fibers entangle themselves and the consequence is shrinking of the wool and formation of a firm surface- felt. We can make felt from most of animal hair, even from human hair (dread lock). The workshop will take place in the afternoon hours (3 school hours). It is appropriate for adults as well as for the children, older than 8 years. No previous knowledge is needed. Due to space limitation the registration is essential. Contribution for materials, leading and the final product is 10€ per person. At the time there will be an exhibition of felting work of our students that dedicate themselves to exploring different ways to express themselves through felting wool. Our work at the creative workshop will be included. The exhibition, with which we try to alert the public of our endangered heritage, will be open until 10th of October 2017. The woorkshop will be conducted by Terezija Kastelic and Nataša Pečkaj.
