Event description

At the Saltpans Feast within the European project YouInHerit (program Interreg Central Europe) Maritime Museum "Sergej Mašera" Piran, in cooperation with the College Izola (Department Restaurant business and tourism) and local fishermen, organized a workshop of ‘fish salting’ (anchovies and sardines). Such a traditional preservation of fish is a real craft, typical of the Mediterranean coast, and requires high-quality raw materials (fish and salt), lot of effort and skilled manual work. At the workshop, two young students of the College Izola showed the ‘school’ method of fish salting, while fishermen, showed their traditional approach. In fact, it is a similar method with a different time schedule. Stored in wooden barrels at the Museum, fish will be preserved in salt until autumn, when we will organized another workshop where visitors will be able to try them. The fish will be cleaned, filleted and stored in Istrian extra-virgin olive oil with different spices. In the week of DEKD the expert of Maritime Museum "Sergej Mašera" Piran, in cooperation with the College Izola (Department Restaurant business and tourism) and local fishermen will prepare the second part of workshop. The fish will be in traditional way cleaned, filleted and stored in Istrian extra-virgin olive oil with different spices.
