Event description
The project Cultural Heritage Week coincides with the Days of European Cultural Heritage, which are a joint action undertaken every year by numerous European countries under the auspices of the Council of Europe and the European Commission. The aim of this week is to strengthen the citizens' feeling of a common identity and to spread the awareness of the meaning of cultural heritage among the young. Otočec is a settlement on the left riverbank of the river Krka. It has existed as a market town called Šentpeter for several centuries. Otočec experienced a rapid development in the 1970s and 1980s and then it grew furthermore in the 1990s to become an urbanised countryside settlement. It has also become an important tourist centre with a rich natural and cultural heritage. During the Cultural Heritage Week, both teachers and students of Otočec Primary School will join the common European topic for 2018, which will take place under the slogan “Our heritage: where the past meets the future”. By means of organizing varied activities during the Cultural Heritage Week we intend to encourage our students and citizens of Otočec to include more contents from the field of cultural and natural heritage protection in educational processes both in formal as well as informal education. The two aims we are going to pursue during the Cultural Heritage Week are to: Acquaint the students with the basics of recognizing, discovering, conserving and protecting our heritage and Teach them how, where and from whom to acquire basic information regarding our cultural and natural heritage. At Otočec Primary School, project activities are going to take place on Thursday, 4th October 2018, in the form of a cross-curricularly connected Cultural Day for all the students of Grades 1-9. We wish to introduce cultural heritage to our students as a source of learning about our past, which teaches us how our ancestors lived, what they believed in, how they celebrated important moments in their lives and how they played. This way our students will be able to understand their culture and themselves better and they will also be able to pass on the knowledge about these customs to future generations. Under the guidance of their mentors at school, the help of the local community Otočec and various societies and external associates our students will acquaint themselves with and explore especially the legacy of the intangible cultural heritage (customs, traditions, games) in the vicinity as well as farther away from Otočec. Our upper-primary level students will also peek across the borders of Slovenia in this regard. The activities of the project week will take place at school. Our lower-primary level students are going to explore how their peers used to play. They will find out about life in the past, the objects people used to use in their everyday lives and at work, how houses used to be built and they will also try to find possible witnesses of the past in their surroundings. Since two castles are located near Otočec, our students will explore how the noblemen and local inhabitants lived in the past. Our students will also acquaint themselves with less familiar customs and traditions, which mostly exist only in written sources in many places. They will also find out and experience what school lessons used to look like in the past. For our upper-primary level students various workshops will be organised on cultural day. In the Art workshop they will find out about the role and importance of the Slovene folk decorative art, get to know the characteristics of decorative embellishment such as shapes, motifs, rhythm and stylization on the one hand, and develop the sense of national and general artistic cultural heritage on the other hand. In the Literary workshop, the students will develop their positive attitude towards the Slovene language. Reading folk literary texts will provide them with an opportunity for shaping their personal and national identity as well as familiarizing themselves with their culture. They will be provided with an opportunity to re-create folk literary motifs and themes in more modern and contemporary ways. In the Theatre workshop, students will acquaint themselves with folk customs and traditions and dramatize them on stage, too. In the Sports workshop, the students will familiarize themselves with old sports games and try them out as well. While the students will research and compare elements of cultural heritage in the United Kingdom and in Slovenia in the English language workshop, they will find out more about Slovene folk musical instruments and folk dances from different regions of Slovenia in the Music workshop. The students will actively participate in several other workshops, where they will compare and contrast wedding customs and traditions from the past with contemporary ones, create challenging games out of wood and paper and thus discover tracks of the past in several different ways. The Cultural Heritage week will end with the final event in the afternoon on Thursday, 4th October 2018, where our students will perform and participate in a cultural programme accompanied by an exhibition of the models they will have created in the workshops during the Cultural Day. The cultural event will be open for all townspeople, the general and professional public, thus enabling us to further raise the awareness regarding the importance of tangible and intangible cultural heritage among them, too. We are deeply convinced that everyone can contribute to its preservation, but each and everyone needs to find their own way of accomplishing this. We are aware of the fact that Slovenia is not just a beautiful country with all its natural characteristics, but it is also a land of rich cultural heritage. Moreover, it is a country of people with a culture of the heart, who can cherish the wealth of cultural heritage traditions entrusted to us by our ancestors and who will proudly keep them to transfer them to our descendants.
