Event description
Carbonate layers at Lukač(k) in Jarčja Dolina near Žiri were deposited in the sea at the end of Paleozoic and at the beginning of Mesozoic and are termed Permian–Triassic boundary. Remains of organisms in these sediment display one of the greatest extinctions in the last 550 million years of Earth's history. It happened about 250 million years ago, when 96% of all species of marine organisms and 70% of species of terrestrial vertebrates disappeared. Probable cause were volcanic eruptions and enormous quantities of lava in Siberia, which poisoned the sea and air and released greenhouse gases that overheated the Earth.
