KAMENTON – ongoing event Brief description: A yearly “karst dry stone wall repairing marathon” for children from Karst primary schools and kindergartens that starts at 8 AM and lasts till 8 PM on a Saturday. After an introductory motivation, three teams of five children with three practitioners learn and practice karst dry stone walling. After two hours the next three teams of five exchange with them and so on till 8 PM. Actors involved: Partnerstvo za ohranitev in popularizacijo kraške suhozidne gradnje (Partnership for the Preservation and Popularization of Karst Dry stone Walling) with Zavod Anima Mundi (Anima Mundi Institut), Javni zavod Park Škocjanske jame, Slovenija (Škocjan Caves Public Service Agency, Slovenia), Vrtec Sežana (Sežana Kindergarten), local community, bearers and practitioners of karst dry stone walling, school teachers and parents Location: Karst. Each year the location is decided by the organizers, school and kindergarten teachers. In 2018 the event was carried out in the village of Povir, in 2019 it was supposed to be carried out near the town of Sežana, in 2020 was definitely going to be carried out near Sežana Date/Time frame: One Saturday for 12 hours, once per year. In 2018 it was carried out 9. 6. 2018. In 2019 it was organized for the 21. 9. 2019, but canceled a few days before due to one land owner’s consensus missing. In 2020 was planned for 18. 4. 2020. The time frame of the event is 12 hours, but can be adjusted according to the number of children, weather forecast etc. / Presumably it will be carried out in autumn 2020. Scope: Karst children learning about karst dry stone walls, experiencing karst dry stone walling and making bonds with their ancestors’ heritage by their own hands so to speak. Results: In 2018 when the event was successfully carried out there were little less than 100 children from six Karst primary schools (one from the Italian side of the border), one kindergarten unit, six bearers and practitioners, parents and locals attending the event and with common efforts repaired 35 m of dry stone wall by the road entering the village. Four man from the village came to help build the wall, some of the parents who brought their children helped as well, local women were bringing fruits, sweets, drinks for children and an older villager was taking groups that already finished working on a guided tour around the village.
