This year the Festival of Medieval and Reneissance music FLORES MUSICAE marks its 11th edition. Since its inception in 2011, under the name Days of Early Music, almost 50 concerts and 10 lectures and international master classes have taken place between Goriška, Kras, Brda, Friuli and Ljubljana, which have together created a new interesting audience. It has revived many architectural gems and has placed our region on the international map of events in Early music. It is one of the few world festivals that focuses almost exclusively on Medieval and Renaissance music. Troubadour is probably the first word that comes to mind when we think of medieval music. In its 11th edition, the Flores Musicae Festival will focus on this very concept of the poet-singer, which appeared in southern France in the 12th century and is still relevant today. Whether it is chivalrous lyricism and courtly love or more moral and political themes, man has probably been narrating and confessing through song for at least a millennium. On the 700th anniversary of the death of one of the greatest writers of all time, Dante, we will be able to listen to the music of troubadours of his time and also two modern troubadours: from our unique troubadour Iztok Mlakar to Arnaut Daniel and other 13th century troubadours interpreted by the beautiful Anna Azem; and from Old Icelandic legends performed by the outstanding young duo Moirai to acclaimed jazz troubadour Susanne Abbuehl. Reviveing many architectural gems through 10 editions this year we'll stop at the Church of St. Michael in Šmihel near Nova Gorica. The small church with its ghotic beginnings will host the concert of the french-american duo Moirai which was founded in 2015 in Reykjavik by Swiss singer and harpist Hanna Marti and American flutist Mara Winter. They are dedicated to researching and reconstructing the music of the early and high Middle Ages. In this program, they dedicate themselves to the legends of the Old Icelandic epic Edd, written in the 13th century. These stories of fights with dragons, cursed gold, court intrigues, vengeful valkyries, brave heroines, prophets and seers.
