The TOMATO project (The Original Museum Available To All) is an initiative funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Commission. Its aim is to increase the accessibility of cultural and educational institutions, particularly for children from physically, mentally, and socially disadvantaged backgrounds. The project is being implemented by an international team of 13 partners and 3 associated partners across eight countries: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Romania, and Slovenia. TOMATO is developing a physical kit and an app designed to provide virtual museum experiences in an engaging, curiosity-driven, and hands-on way. Both the kit and app are being created based on input from consultations with children, families, and social workers. The project’s primary objective is to offer growth opportunities for every child, particularly those disadvantaged by economic, social, or educational barriers. Moreover, the project seeks to support cultural institutions in adopting strategies that make their collections more accessible and affordable for all families. Initially, the project will produce eight unique kits and one app for eight different museums: Abakkum, Casa Tartini, and Škrateljc in Slovenia; Istrian de Dignan in Croatia; Sladovna in the Czech Republic; Frida and Fred in Austria; Museo d'Arte Orientale di Venezia and Esapolis in Italy. A total of one thousand kits will be produced and, thanks to funding from Creative Europe, these will be distributed free of charge. The project is also actively seeking new partners to expand its reach to additional museums and cultural institutions. By 'putting' museums into a box, the project aims to make cultural experiences accessible to everyone. The carefully designed kits will offer surprising and hands-on activities that stimulate curiosity in both children and adults. In addition, the 3D app will enable virtual visits to the eight museums, making it easy to explore them via smartphone or tablet.
