Event description

As part of the European Heritage Days, which this year take place under the slogan 'Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future,' we invite you to join us on Wednesday, 1 October at 5 p.m. for a guided tour of Plečnik’s arrangement of Vegova Street, led by Ana Porok, curator at the Plečnik House. Vegova Street, which was built on the site of a former moat where the walls of Roman Emona and the medieval city met, was designed by Plečnik as an important cultural axis. Along the street stand the buildings of the University of Ljubljana, the former Realka High School, the Glasbena Matica Music Society, Music School, and the National and University Library. Plečnik worked on the street’s arrangement for almost 15 years, creating an atmosphere that is both reverent and poetic. The entrances to the cultural institutions are highlighted, while areas for rest have been arranged among the trees, offering views of life unfolding on the street. With the planting of tall poplars in Zvezda Park and lower maples along the street, Plečnik further articulated the street ambiance and visually connected Congress Square with French Revolution Square. He composed the entire layout of Vegova Street by gradually adding smaller elements and linking them into a whole—adding staircases, stone walls, and even a tobacco kiosk. In doing so, he considered the composition of the buildings, spatial axes, and viewpoints. Join us for a tour of one of Ljubljana’s most beautiful streets and discover how Plečnik, through refined architectural interventions on the site of former city walls, created a cultural axis with a truly unique character. Book your place on the free guided tour at prijava@mgml.si or call 01 24 12 506 (Mon-Fri, 8.00-14.00). The tour will be conducted in Slovene.
