Are you curious about the journey of archaeological finds from their discovery to their place in museum exhibitions? You are warmly invited to a guided tour of the Archaeological Centre of the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana, which will take place on Wednesday, 8 October 2025, at 5.00 p.m. at Letališka cesta 9a in Ljubljana. The Archaeological Centre is a vibrant cultural hub where dialogue between the past and present takes place, and creativity is nurtured. Regardless of how seemingly unusual or ordinary the objects may be, it offers us windows into history and connects us with our past. At the end of 2020, in a former airport hangar in the Moste district, the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana established the MGML Archaeological Centre. Covering an area of 800 m², the centre temporarily stores archaeological material, finds and samples, organic materials, large quantities of ceramic building material, mosaic fragments, and individual architectural elements. The centre carries out various stages of archaeological work, including logistical and professional support for archaeological research, primary processing and preventive conservation of materials, museological processing and loaning of materials, storage and management of archaeological site archives, and the lending of materials to external users. The centre is also becoming a platform for collaboration with external experts from various fields. During the guided tour of the Archaeological Centre, you will learn about the work of archaeologists after excavations have ended and view fascinating artefacts such as Roman sarcophagi, amphorae, and jewellery. You will also discover what happens to objects that do not make it into exhibition displays.
