Event description
As part of the European Heritage Days, you are warmly invited to a unique guided walk through the centre of Ljubljana on Tuesday, 7 October 2025, at 4.30 p.m. Together, we will explore the remnants of Roman Emona and learn about the work of experts dedicated to preserving archaeological heritage in an urban environment. Archaeologists Dr Bernarda Županek, curator for antiquity at the City Museum of Ljubljana, and Mija Topličanec, conservation advisor at the Ljubljana Regional Unit of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, will guide us through part of the Archaeological Park Emona. They will present the work of archaeologists and conservators that usually remains hidden from the public eye, and discuss the challenges of preserving immovable heritage in a modern city. We will begin in the basement of the City Museum of Ljubljana, where we will take a look at a model of Emona and the preserved remains of its suburbs. Our path will then take us to the construction site of the new National and University Library (NUK2), one of the most prominent recent archaeological sites. There, we will talk about how immovable heritage in Ljubljana was protected in the past and how it is protected today, the challenges wich professionals face in large-scale and technically demanding projects in the heart of ancient Emona, and the adaptations to planning and work that are required. Next, we will head to an excellent example of synergy between the old and the new—the so-called Ferant blocks, designed by architect Edvard Ravnikar. There, we will visit the Jakopič Gallery, where the ruins of the Emona basilica and rotunda are preserved. The tour will conclude at the site of Emona’s early Christian center, where we will view the remains of a baptistery, examine a notable example of Roman remains presentation from the 1970s, and discuss modern approaches to presenting archaeological sites. The archaeologists will also provide useful advice on how to proceed when planning private construction projects in archaeologically rich and protected areas and will discuss the challenges of collaborating with architects and investors. Join us and discover what lies beneath the surface of modern Ljubljana on a special guided tour that will unveil the city’s rich past and emphasize the importance of preserving Roman heritage in a rapidly growing urban environment. Book your place at prijava@mgml.si or call 01 24 12 506 (Mon-Fri, 8.00-14.00). The tour will be conducted in Slovene.
