Event description
As part of the European Heritage Days, we invite you to a guided tour of the Roman Wall on Wednesday, 8 October at 5 p.m. Join us on a journey through 2,000 years of history at this Ljubljana landmark guided by Dr Bernarda Županek, curator for antiquity at the City Museum of Ljubljana, and Ana Porok, curator at the Plečnik House. This guided tour, held under this year's European Heritage Days theme, “Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future,” will unveil the rich history of Ljubljana’s Roman Wall, offering insights into Roman Emona and the efforts of architect Jože Plečnik to preserve the wall in the 1920s. According to archaeologists, the walls of Emona once reached a height of 6–8 meters, included more than 20 towers, and had four main gates. During the tour, we will take a closer look at the southern gate. Almost 2,000 years later, in the early 20th century, the southern section of Emona’s wall was rediscovered during archaeological excavations. It was reconstructed, reinforced with an internal embankment, and protected with a turf covering. After World War I, some advocated for the wall’s removal in the name of urban development, but conservator Dr. France Stele opposed this idea and defended its preservation in his booklet V obrambo rimskega zidu na Mirju. His efforts to preserve the Roman Wall brought him into close collaboration—and friendship—with architect Jože Plečnik. Together, they developed a plan for the creation of an archaeological park, which was established between 1928 and 1938. This was the first public space in Ljubljana where Emona’s ancient heritage was brought to the forefront. Plečnik enhanced the authentic Roman character with new interpretations of Roman architecture, creating a unique archaeological monument park where original, ancient, and modern architectural elements intertwine. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore Ljubljana’s fascinating past during the European Heritage Days, led by two outstanding experts! Book your place on the free guided tour at prijava@mgml.si or call 01 24 12 506 (Mon-Fri, 8.00-14.00). The tour will be conducted in Slovene.
