European Heritage Days invite you into the home of one of Ljubljana’s most influential mayors – Ivan Hribar. He was an extraordinary figure who left an indelible mark on the political, social, and cultural life of Ljubljana at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. His charisma, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the city placed him among the most prominent mayors in Ljubljana’s history. As a politician, poet, translator, publicist, and entrepreneur, Hribar gave Ljubljana a new identity and elevated it to the level of a true European city. Despite political struggles and attempts to discredit him, his efforts for the progress of the nation and the city left a lasting legacy. He was a cosmopolitan, an activist, and an idealist, remembered also as a proud Slav whose desire to unite Slavic peoples was at least partially realized. Villa Zlatica offers a unique journey through a century in which new nations emerged, and old empires crumbled. The museum collection, featuring numerous Art Nouveau objects, many of them once owned by the Hribar family, tells the story of the newly emerging bourgeois class, which began to develop in Ljubljana with industrialization. These objects provide insight into many personal stories from the life of the Hribar family. Join us and discover numerous hidden stories from the life of Ivan Hribar, his family, and the people of Ljubljana during this pivotal period.
