Students of the Vrtovin Primary School Branch are exploring the dialect of their local area. In the months of May, June, and September, all students will take part in the project Let’s Not Lose Our Words. Their first task will be to collect as many dialect words, expressions, phrases, sayings, and proverbs as possible from local residents and their grandparents—those that are characteristic of their village and its surroundings. They will then find standard language equivalents or more modern expressions for these words. All collected material will be presented in a booklet—a kind of dictionary of the Vrtovin dialect. The students will also try to use these words in storytelling or in writing local fairy tales. We will invite older residents to the school (or visit them at their homes), where they will share stories about the language and expressions of their childhood. They may also have written materials in dialect (letters, postcards, personal notes, etc.). Everything we collect, write, and research will be presented at an exhibition in the community hall, which will take place from September 28 to October 9, 2026, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
